Carol Service - Tower of London
Posted: 16th December 2019
The Company once again was fortunate enough to continue its tradition of holding the annual Carol Service in the Chapel Royal of St Peter ad Vincula in the Tower of London. We are very grateful to the Constable of the Tower and Honorary Liveryman General the Lord Houghton GCB CBE DL and our Honorary Chaplain, the Reverend Canon Roger Hall MBE, Chaplain to the Tower of London, for continuing to facilitate this wonderful evening each year.
The chapel was packed with over 170 people full of Company Past Masters, Wardens, Liverymen, Freemen, Members and Apprentices alongside their friends and family. The evening began with an an introduction from Reverend Canon Roger Hall who welcomed the Company into the historic chapel while also impressing on the congregation the importance of the charitable services the chapel undertakes, most notably in support of the Tower Hamlets Food Bank and how much they welcome the Company’s generous support in this endeavour through collections and donations from the evening.
The choir, conducted by Master of Music Colm Carey BMus, performed wonderful renditions of ‘Adam Lay Ybounden’ by Boris Ord, ‘Away in a Manger’ arranged by Sir David Willcocks, ‘My Lord is Come’ by Will Todd and my personal favourite from the evening, Benjamin Britten’s lively ‘This Little Babe’. The congregation joined in singing traditional carols including, Once in Royal David’s City, Good King Wenceslas, O little Town of Bethlehem, O Come All Ye Faithful and Hark the Herald Angels Sing.
Lessons were read by the Chaplain, the Clerk, Honorary Court Assistant Richard Monk, Court Assistant Russell Penny, Young Member Frederick Carter and Apprentice Nicolas Markantonis. The Master read In Memoriam A.H.H. by Alfred, Lord Tennyson.
The Carol Service in The Chapel Royal of St Peter ad Vincula in the Tower of London was a magnificent and enjoyable family occasion, particularly as it was my first time in attendance and was a most fitting start to the festive season. We thank all involved in making it happen and in particular our Honorary Chaplain, the Master of Music, the Choir, the Organist and and Clerk.
